‘The cause of ALL negative emotions

is a disruption in the Body’s subtle Energy System.’

Gary Craig, founder of modern Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

‘Tapping’ or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) was developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford Engineer. It is a Meridian Energy Therapy like acupuncture, working directly on the meridian system in the body, but instead of needles, simply tapping on or massaging the major meridian points stimulates them.  Many have since adapted and individualized EFT. Tapping is used to help people with issues on several levels – emotional, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It addresses the situation as you believe it to be.  This identifies EFT as a true mind-body healing technique, because it simultaneously combines the physical effects of meridian treatments with the mental effects of focusing on the pain or ‘issue’.

It has been established that both ‘Tapping’ and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) such as acupuncture for example, use the same invisible and inter-connecting pathways called ‘meridians’. Behaving like electrical circuits, these meridians connect to all the body’s tissues and organs – every cell, bone and tendon. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this electrical flow of energy around the body is known as ‘life-force’ or ‘Chi’ and can actually be measured by medical equipment (for example, an MRI scan).

When ‘Chi’ no longer flows, but has been disrupted or ‘blocked’ in certain areas of the body, physical problems or disease often occur. These blockages can remain in the body’s subtle energy system for many years and, according to Gary Craig (see quote above), result in negative emotions and responses.

However, when balance and harmony are restored to the body’s energy system, the negative emotions and physical symptoms caused by the energy blockages heal. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) enables this, because tapping on the meridian points makes you feel more calm and relaxed; you gain confidence as you start to think more clearly.

Previously, it was thought that bad memories caused negative emotions. However, it is the disruption in the body’s energy systems which actually causes the negative emotions and responses. These may be either consciously or unconsciously triggered.

Along with every memory (or experience) stored by our brain, is a connected emotion. When we recall or remember an experience, the brain also brings back any emotion connected with it, as well as the information required. This explains the good feelings which occur when we see somebody we love.

Unfortunately, negative or bad memories are naturally easier to remember than good or positive ones; so each time a negative memory is triggered (consciously or unconsciously), the negative emotion (fear, anger, hurt) associated with it will be felt too. These electrical messages to the brain then cause imbalance or even blockage in the energy system – like a short-circuit.

It is therefore important to maintain balance and flow in order to have good emotional health. EFT is a powerful tool we can use to change the way we react to uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and negative emotions.

Emotional health is often overlooked, yet it is essential to physical health and healing. Even with proper diet and lifestyle, optimal healing and health is very difficult to achieve if emotional blockages exist. EFT is highly recommended to help optimize health and well being.

Apart from this EFT is:

  • Easy to learn and painless;
  • Does not involve needles or drugs;
  • Flexible – anyone can use it, alone or together with an experienced practitioner;
  • Brings relief by allowing us to change the energy we attach to any life circumstances;
  • Quick, effective and inexpensive;
  • Easy to do, wherever you are, whenever you want;
  • An empowering self-help tool.

The principles behind ‘Emotional Freedom Techniques‘ (EFT) were originally discovered by Dr Roger Callahan, a hypnotherapist and cognitive psychologist of over 40 years’ experience. He specialized in finding ways to cure people of unfounded fears, phobias and anxieties, because he himself had suffered from them since childhood.

Dr Callahan had a client named Mary, who suffered from a severe phobia of water – she found it too traumatic to take her children swimming, bathe herself or even see rain. He had been working with her over a year, using his conventional therapies without result, when one day she complained of nausea. Dr Callahan had been learning about acupressure meridian points, so he intuitively asked Mary to tap under her eye (the stomach point), whilst expressing the emotion felt. The fear disappeared immediately – it never returned!

This technique became known as ‘Thought Field Therapy‘ (TFT), on the basis that as thoughts relate to the energy field in the body, changing this energy field by tapping on the meridian points could release negative emotions rapidly and easily. Callahan’s research continued and Thought Field Therapy (TFT) was developed further – it became quite complex to treat and complicated to learn.

Gary Craig was one of Callahan’s students who quite brilliantly, decided to simplify TFT by tapping on all the meridian points for every presenting problem. In doing this, he created a technique that everyone can learn to use very quickly and easily, without requiring specialist diagnostic training, therapy training or even any knowledge of the body’s energy system. He called his method ‘Emotional Freedom Techniques’ (EFT). Since then, EFT has also become known as ‘Tapping‘ and has gained wide-spread acceptance.

Silvia Hartmann was another of the original developers of Tapping. She went on to create ‘Energy Emotional Freedom Techniques‘ (Energy EFT), developing the Energy EFT Master Practitioner training course in 2012 – still the most advanced and integrated Energy EFT Tapping course available.

Hartmann began in 1998 by writing ‘The Meridian & Energy Therapy Practitioner‘ (MET Prac.). This was one of the first professional level Classic EFT training books. She published ‘Adventures in EFT‘ (the first book on Classic EFT) in 1999.

These days, scientific studies are being conducted into Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and the various developments since.
