Introducing Jikiden Reiki

'Jikiden Reiki is our attempt to re-introduce the original style

of Reiki to people in its simple authentic form'

Tadao Yamaguchi

You may already know...

Reiki, which originated in Japan, is an energy healing or natural therapy carried out by placing hands on the body.  Practitioners receive Reiki energy (also called ‘life-force’ or ‘Ki’), from all around us in the Universe and transmit it onto the receiver. As this ‘life-force energy’ is focused on the areas where it is most needed, the body’s natural healing abilities are stimulated. The word ‘Jikiden’ means ‘directly taught’, which defines Jikiden Reiki as having been ‘directly passed on’ from the original founder himself. It is authentic and pure, as close to the original Japanese teachings as is possible; if compared with the various forms of 'Western Reiki', these in contrast, seem somewhat 'diluted'

Origins of Jikiden Reiki

Before World War II, Reiki was very popular in Japan, with more than one million people using it regularly for their physical and psychological health. Its founder, Mikao Usui, had established the first Reiki organisation – The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai – which, incidentally, still exists today. Sadly, Reiki practice became unpopular and went ‘underground’ after the War due to Usui’s connection with the Japanese Navy. Today, the Gakkai neither provides treatments nor promotes Reiki teachings; as a result, there were only ever 20 Reiki Masters created by Usui during his lifetime. Whilst several of these branched out, creating their own brand of healing, a certain Dr Chujiro Hayashi remained true to teaching Reiki in its authentic form and continued practicing, with Usui’s blessing.

How ‘Western Reiki’ began

Dr Chujiro Hayashi began giving treatments to a Japanese-American lady who actually lived in Hawaii but was visiting Japan to undergo an operation. Hawayo Takata had been told by doctors that she was terminally ill and did not have long to live. Within a year however, she was cured of her illness and this led her to learn Reiki. She duly returned to Hawaii and established a healing clinic. This is how ‘Western Reiki’ began and from where it spread throughout the world… whilst it was thought the original Japanese Reiki practice had died out completely.

Returning to Jikiden

However, it had not: according to Tadao Yamaguchi (Co-founder, Jikiden Reiki), his family is lucky enough to have had 75 years of experience treating people with Reiki. His mother, Chiyoko Yamaguchi spent her entire life treating her 4 sons as well as other people. And Tadao has been giving people Reiki treatments since 1965! Initiated at the age of 17 in 1938, Chiyoko learned Reiki directly from Dr Hayashi, Usui sensei’s direct disciple himself! This exciting news only came to light by chance in the late 1990’s.

In 1999, encouraged by Western Reiki practitioners they had met, Tadao and his mother Chiyoko began teaching the original Japanese Reiki as passed down directly from Usui, via Hayashi. Significantly, as Reiki started to make a come-back in Japan, the Reiki that his mother and family had learned, had never been influenced by this new 'Western Reiki'. The name ‘Jikiden Reiki’ is a deliberate effort to maintain the original Japanese Reiki in its purest, simple yet effective form.
